China has urged the international community to uphold the principles of the UN Charter and promote human rights through security, development and cooperation.

Chen Xu, China's permanent representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, made the remarks on Tuesday while delivering a joint statement on behalf of the Group of Friends on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights through Dialogue and Cooperation at the 59th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

Chen called on international human rights mechanisms to adhere to the principles of universality, impartiality, objectivity, non-politicization and non-selectivity, and to safeguard their credibility and integrity.

He noted that the world is undergoing a period of heightened turbulence and transformation and that achieving human rights for all remains a long-term and complex challenge.

As the United Nations marks its 80th anniversary this year, Chen called on all parties to reaffirm their commitment to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and work together to uphold the authority and standing of the organization.

He emphasized that there is no universal model for human rights development, and no country should impose its own approach on others.

Chen highlighted the significance of June 10, which marked the first International Day for Dialogue Among Civilizations established by the UN. He called on all parties to embrace genuine multilateralism, respect the diversity of world civilizations, and promote human rights through security, development and cooperation to ensure the healthy development of the global human rights cause.

The 59th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council opened on June 16 in Geneva, Switzerland, and is scheduled to conclude on July 9.
